As a design professional at HKS, Surbhi supports complex healthcare projects for Intermountain Health and the University of Utah Health, as well as various other project types and aspects of our design enterprise. She contributes across all project phases and plays an active role in proposal strategy and studio culture as the Salt Lake City forum representative. In 2025, she was selected as an HKS Global Design Fellow, where she developed a tactical urbanism proposal supporting refugee integration in Dallas — an inspiring example of her commitment to human-centered design.

On Oct. 28, 1938, when the Murray Theatre at 4961 South State Street opened, there were two ubiquitous forms of entertainment in the United States: radios — 80% of households had one — and motion pictures — cinemas could be found in most population centers, and “talkies” had become all the rage in the ’30s. Tony Duvall and Joseph Lawrence, who collaborated to build the Murray, also owned four other movie theaters in Utah. Duvall built the Gem and New Iris in Murray, and Lawrence built the Villa in Salt Lake City and the Academy in Provo.

In 2027, NWL (Naylor Wentworth Lund) Architects will celebrate its 75th anniversary — a rare milestone that places the firm among Utah’s longest-standing architectural agencies. The firm originated in 1952 with founder Roy Richards Silver, whose initial focus was designing small rural elementary schools. His partnership with architect Dale Allsop strengthened the firm’s foothold in educational design early on.

I’ve been accused of being an AIA addict. I started volunteering shortly after receiving my license in California as the IDP coordinator for Southern California with the AIA California Council. Little did I know what a journey it would take me on. After more than 20 years of being involved with the AIA, I have a much clearer “why” for my involvement.

One of the great honors that my association with AIA Utah brings me is the opportunity to interview “AIA Utah Legends” — architects who have been practicing in Utah for many decades and are responsible for founding legacy firms and designing seminal buildings. We talk with these folks, record the interviews, write an article for Reflexion and, thanks to the donated efforts of videographer Robert Holman, produce a video. All this is archived in the Marriott Library for the perusal of future generations.
