Having obtained his license in 2016, paired with his years of leadership experience and cultivation of industry and community relationships, Shawn Benjamin’s engagement in the profession, state and region has become a force majeure. He has been a mainstay in our profession, aptly filling a variety of roles, including significant leadership positions in architectural firms, since entering professional practice.

Shawn’s work across Utah’s academic landscape has had an indelible impact on communities and students alike. His portfolio includes classrooms that support innovation, housing that fosters belonging and performing arts venues that elevate cultural expression. He is especially skilled at designing for people and place — creating architecture that is functional, inspiring and deeply rooted in the needs of the communities it serves.

His involvement and contributions to the architectural profession have been recognized with multiple awards and acknowledgments from industry and community organizations.

While Shawn has been a substantial contributor to the built environment with literally hundreds of projects under his belt, one of his greatest contributions has been made to the people in our industry. Employees, clients and members of the community have all been the beneficiaries of his integrity, design approach and desire to enhance our understanding of ourselves, our trade and its contribution to society.

Shawn has been a steadfast advocate for the profession. Since 2021, he has served on the AIA Utah Board of Directors and the Government Affairs Committee. His leadership has been profound, built on integrity, humility and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

As a colleague, Shawn is a trusted mentor and collaborator. He leads by example, uplifting those around him through careful listening, generosity of spirit and a deep respect for the craft of architecture.
